The Criminal Justice Research Program acts as a focal point for cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research on issues relevant to the three arms of criminal justice: police, courts and corrections. Its aim is to enhance the practical outcomes for the criminal justice system in Queensland and nationally. The Criminal Justice research program already has already received funding for a number of significant projects, including an ARC Linkage grant with the Queensland State Coroner to establish best practice guidelines for the use of internal autopsies, and an ARC Discovery grant on building rule of law capacity in Cambodia. Other areas of research being undertaken by the Program include child abuse and criminal law, deterrence in sentencing, anti-social behaviour of children and adolescents, mandatory sentencing, indigenous sentencing, children in detention, and the cutting-edge area of therapeutic jurisprudence. Members of the Criminal Justice program include recognised experts in the fields of criminology, sentencing and indigenous criminal justice. The program is the only research program in Queensland dedicated specifically to criminal justice issues, and it is focused on achieving real-world outcomes for criminal justice agencies such as police, corrective services and the judiciary.
